These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the OpenKey application and related official packages published by OpenSelfHosting. By downloading, installing, or using OpenKey, you agree to these Terms.

1. The service

OpenKey is a password manager that encrypts vault data on your device. An optional sync API stores ciphertext only when you point the app at a server you control (or that someone else operates for you). OpenSelfHosting does not provide a mandatory hosted vault cloud as part of the free core experience described in the docs.

Open packages (server, extension, CLI, docs) are generally available under the MIT License as published in their repositories. The mobile/desktop app may be distributed under store terms in addition to these Terms.

2. Eligibility

You must be able to form a binding contract in your jurisdiction and meet the minimum age for app-store accounts where you install OpenKey (and at least 13, or higher if required locally).

3. Your account and master password

• You create and control your vault with a master password.
• There is no master-password recovery. If you forget it and have no unlockable device session or encrypted backup you can open, your ciphertext is unrecoverable — by design.
• You are responsible for choosing a strong master password, keeping backups you need, and securing devices while the vault is unlocked.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Use OpenKey to violate law or others’ rights
• Attempt to compromise OpenSelfHosting infrastructure, other users’ vaults, or systems you are not authorized to test (except private security research reported per our security policy)
• Misrepresent Pro purchase status or abuse store refund/attestation mechanisms
• Redistribute proprietary store builds in violation of Apple, Google, or Microsoft agreements

Self-hosted servers you run must be secured by you (HTTPS, secrets, access control). Misconfiguration is your responsibility.

5. OpenKey Pro and purchases

Some features require OpenKey Pro (for example unlimited items beyond free caps, export, encrypted .okbak backups, Nearby LAN sync, organizations/sharing, attachments). See Using the app.

• Store purchases and subscriptions are billed by the platform (Apple / Google / Microsoft). Their refund and cancellation rules apply.
• LAN Pro shared over Nearby on certain desktop platforms is a peer attestation convenience, not a substitute for a store purchase on IAP platforms.
• Prices and feature availability may change; we will reflect material product changes in documentation or store listings.

Web builds may not enforce Pro the same way as mobile/desktop builds; do not rely on web behavior for licensing.

6. Third-party services

OpenKey may interact with:

• Operating system Autofill / passkey APIs
• Your self-hosted sync server
• Optional Have I Been Pwned range API (prefix only)
• App store billing APIs
• Nearby peers you pair with

Those services have their own terms. We are not responsible for third-party outages or policies.

7. Intellectual property

OpenKey names, logos, and branding are owned by OpenSelfHosting or its licensors. Open-source components remain under their respective licenses. You receive a personal, non-exclusive license to use the app as distributed — not ownership of OpenSelfHosting trademarks.

8. Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains what is processed on device, what optional sync sends to your server, and how to contact us.

9. Disclaimer of warranties

OpenKey is provided “as is” and “as available” to the maximum extent permitted by law. We disclaim warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that ciphertext will be recoverable without your master password and backups.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, OpenSelfHosting and its contributors are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of OpenKey — including loss of vault access due to a forgotten master password or missing backups.

Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of (a) amounts you paid us for OpenKey Pro in the three months before the claim (excluding store fees retained by platforms) or (b) fifty US dollars (USD $50), except where prohibited.

11. Indemnity

You will defend and indemnify OpenSelfHosting against claims arising from your misuse of OpenKey, your self-hosted deployments, or content you store, to the extent permitted by law.

12. Termination

You may stop using OpenKey at any time (uninstall, delete local data, cancel store subscriptions). We may stop distributing builds or change features. Provisions that by nature should survive (including §§ 3, 7–11, 13) survive termination.

13. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. The “Last updated” date will change. Continued use after changes become effective constitutes acceptance, except where local law requires additional consent.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws applicable to OpenSelfHosting’s principal place of business, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except where mandatory consumer protections in your country of residence apply and cannot be waived.
